Installing Picasa

If you want Google’s Picasa on your EEE, here’s how 🙂

1.) Download Google’s automated installer for their repo authentication key:

2.) Run the newly-downloaded script:

3.) Update apt:

sudo apt-get update

4.) Install Picasa:

sudo apt-get install picasa

You can, of course, add Google’s key and repo name by hand, but, this seemed the easier option.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful.

Incidentally, do you know how to lower the security on the hosts file? I’d love to be able to install Mike’s ad-blocking hosts file — I wasn’t sure html was allowed in the comments field so I put the URL in as my website link — but haven’t been able to figure out how to override the restrictions to edit the file on the Eee.

I would have thought that editing it as root (via sudo) should do the trick. Or do you need to do something else- like make editing it a non-root operation (not a brilliant idea, really :))

If you are looking at blocking ads in FireFox, installing the add-on called “AdBlockPlus” might be easier 🙂

    Thanks for the tips, Neil!

I have followed all the steps but the app won’t start unless I type “sudo -i” first. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

The program, you can download and install it, but it won’t run.

I just got my eee yesterday… and I am brand new to Linux! I tried all of the steps above, but I am told that the computer can’t find Picasa. Did I do something wrong or miss a step? Do have to download the program from google’s website first? I really want to get Picasa working! Any ideas?
