Load OSX 10.5 Leopard on the eeePC

November 24, 2007

Completely not legal but great to read. “So, ever since I got the eeePC I’ve loved how easy it is to tinker with. Since I’m not a Linux guy, I dumped the Xandros preload and opted for Windows XP so I could you my EVDO USB datacard and blogging software easier, but I wondered could I install OSX on it? And, after trial and error – you can!

The only problem is that the eeePC only supports SSE2 instead of the SSE3 that Leopard is coded for. Kinda a bummer, and will require some extra tinkering to coax the OS on the eeePC. Thankfully Adam’s awesome tutorial over at Lifehacker provided an excellent foundation on how to do these hacks.

First, download the Brazil Mac Hack from OSX86 Scene. This patch helps you create a X86 version of Leopard you can install on generic PC’s.

Once that is done, you will need an DMG of Leopard, if you have a Mac you can create and Image in Disk Utility – just make sure your self created image is called osx-leopard105.dmg and it should be saved on your desktop. Or you can skip all the steps below and download Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard [ToH]-RC2 SSE3/SSE2 Intel Only from your favorite BitTorent site – scroll down to the point where you see Leopard is now installed…”

Asustek to push desktop version Eee PC next year

November 24, 2007

This news is not new but if you missed it ASUS will be selling a desktop version of the Eee next year. I suspect this will not be as big a seller though…

“Asustek Computer is developing a desktop version Eee PC which it hopes to launch in 2008, according to Jonathan Tseng, president of marketing at Asustek. Tseng noted that the PC will not include a display, but further specifications and pricing are still under evaluation.

Some component makers pointed out that no matter which version of the Eee PC Asustek launches, they will benefit. However, they noted that since Asustek is currently not seeing outstanding performance in the desktop PC market, the Eee PC’s transition to a desktop version should prove difficult for the company, although the benefits of the plan still outweigh the drawbacks.

On the other hand, some PC vendors remarked that with the growing trend of notebooks replacing desktops, desktop PCs will eventually head toward multi-core CPUs and the mid-range and high-end markets. If Asustek launches a low-price desktop it will not have any positive selling points, other than the Eee PC brand.”

ASUS Eee PC is America’s Most Wanted Christmas Gift

November 24, 2007

The ASUS Eee PC is once again in the limelight. This time, it has been billed as America’s most wanted Christmas gift among notebooks products. Several large American shopping websites have started investigating what the average American would want as a Christmas gift in lieu of the fast approaching Christmas buying season; and the result from the American Amazon shopping website and CNET based on 14th of November unanimously places the ASUS Eee PC at the top spot on the wish list.

So overwhelming is the Eee PC’s popularity in America that all the units were snapped up – creating a lack of stock; and stores were inundated with orders for the Christmas season as soon as it was put on the shelves. Long queues were noted on launch day as people flocked to put their hands on the popular notebook.

“In the two weeks since it’s launch in the US, the Eee PC has already sold ten thousand sets,” said Sunny Han, Director of ASUS Global Brand Center – confirming the Eee PC’s massive US sales figures. By the end of this year, the projected sales goal of 350 thousand will be met; and next year that figure is projected at 3 to 5 million. Full story is here.
